早川雪洲

私は新聞の雑報で雪洲が郷里で涙に咽んだということを読む・・・・

私の眼前に開く活動写真の一幕、場面は田舎家で古びた縁側が庭に向っている、

登場俳優の雪洲は顔色悪く、縁側でよろめき倒れる

妻の鶴子は雪洲の靴の紐を解く、(これは西洋には無い圖です、)

室内の仏壇からは黄色な細い蝋燭の火が燃えて、

雪洲は仏壇の前へ這いずって行き亡き両親の位牌を見て泣きむせぶ。

雪洲君、私は始君の真実な場面を見ました、

君も恐らく始めて真実な人間の涙を体験してでしょう、

又君は国へ帰って始めて真実な人間 となってでありましょう。

若し君に真実な芸術心があるならば、君はいくつも西洋に有名な写真を持っていますが、

君はそれ等を虚偽の遊戯だとして捨ててしまいたく思うでしょう。

君は今真実な人間の涙の瞬時を体験しました、

君は無益に帰朝しなかったことを私は喜びます、

君が真実な人間の味を知ったことを私は喜びます、

そして私は君に質問するが、

『真実な人間として君は再び、ホリウッドの撮影所に入る勇気がありますか?』

watashi wa shinbun no zappou de Sesshuu ga kyouri de namida ni musenda to iu koto o yomu...

watashi wa ganzen ni aku katsudou shashin no hitomaku, bamen wa inaka de furubita engawa ga niwa ni mukatteiru,

toujou haiyuu no Sesshuu wa kaoiro waruku, engawa de yoromeki taoreru,

tsuma no tsuruko wa Sessue no kutsu no himo o hodoko, (kore wa seiyou ni wa nai zu desu,)

shitsunai no butsudan kara wa koushoku na hosoi rousoku no hi ga moete,

Sessue wa butsudan no mae e haizutte ikinaki ryoushin no ihai o mite naki musebu.

Sessue kun, watashi wa hajimete kimi no shinjitsu na bamen o mimashita,

kimi mo osuraku hajimete shinjitsu na ningen no namida o taiken shite deshou,

mata kimi wa kuni e kaette hajimette shinjitsu na ningen to natte de arimashou.

wakashi kimi ni shinjitsu na geijutsu kokoro ga aru naraba, kimi wa ikutsu mo seiyou ni yuumei na shashin o motte imasu ga,

kimi wa sore nado o kyogi no yuugi da toshite sutete shimaitaku omou deshou.

kimi wa ima shinjitsu na ningen no shunji o taikken shimashita,

kimi wa mueki ni kitchou shinakatta koto o watashi wa yorokobimasu

kimi ga shinjitsu na ningen no aji o shitta koto o watashi wa yorokobimasu,

soshite watashi wa kimi ni shitsumon suru ga,

shinjitsu na ningen toshite kimi wa futatabi, horiwuddo no satsueijo ni hairu yuki ga arimasu ka?"

I read in a newspaper note how Sessue was choked up with tears about his hometown . . . .

before my eyes I open the newspaper activities pictures an act, the scene a country house, an antique-looking veranda facing a garden,

on stage enters badly-complexioned Sessue on the balcony staggering and falling,

his wife Tsuruko untying his shoelaces, (this is not a Western picture)

from the butsudan in the room the yellow light of a slender candle burning,

Sessue crawls to the Buddhist altar and seeing the stone tablets of his parents is choked with tears.

Sessue, I saw for the first time your true scene,

perhaps it might be the first true human tears,

then it would be that when you returned home you became for the first time truly human.

If in your youth your true heart of art existed, how many famous western pictures you have,

I would think you would have thrown away playing that game of lies.

now you experienced an instant of true humanity,

I rejoice that you futilely returned home,

I rejoice that you tasted true humanity,

so I would ask you,

"as a true human do you have the courage to reenter a Hollywood studio?"
